Defy “The Culture of Comparison” and Run Your Own Race

Your days are your life in miniature. And as you live each day, so you live your life. You want to live an amazing life? Focus on living consistently great days. Here’s a pro tip for you or a bonus idea. Just make today better than yesterday. Make that your dominant obsession. Make today better than yesterday. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Eleanor Roosevelt said it well. She said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Isn’t that good? Comparison is the thief of joy. Forget about what other people are doing. One of my mentors once said to me when I was about 21, “Run your own race. Stay in your own lane. The only competition you have is you.” There’s an Indian proverb and it goes like this, “There is nothing useful in being superior to others. True superiority lies in being superior to your former self.”So, each day when you’re with people, be there, be present. It shines a light on their gifts and talents. Your job is to make people feel bigger when they’re around you. Nelson Mandela could do that. And there are many other titans of industry and world changers in history makers, they had that ability. When you were with them, they just made you feel bigger, and they made you believe, and they made you feel good, and they made you feel important. Everyone you meet has an invisible sign around their neck that simply says, “Make me feel special, important, and cared for.” Think about that.
