The 66-Day Minimum Protocol to Wire In New Habits to the Point of Automaticity

Automatic takes practice. Well, here’s some science for you. According to the University College of London, it takes 66 days to wire in a new habit to the point where it becomes easier to do the new habit than not to do the new habit. And the term researchers use is automaticity. You might want to write that down. You might want to just say the word because that’ll deepen the learning. Automaticity. When you see someone who gets up at five o’clock, you see someone who perhaps seems automatically to be optimistic. You see someone who almost religiously follows their practices. Maybe it’s scheduling. Maybe it’s a meeting at a certain time. You see the best producers and you look at them and you say, “Well, wow. They seem to do those skills automatically.” It’s not that they have a talent you don’t have. It’s because they have practiced the new skill to the point of automaticity. And it takes you 66 days of daily practice to wire in the new habit until it becomes easier to do it than not to do it.
